Reading Your Tires Like a Pro

Tire sizes are needed in order to change the tires on your vehicle. It's not okay to put just any tire on there. Luckily, the sizes are written in code on the wall of your tires. You will likely see a "P" first, which identifies the tire for a passenger vehicle. The next number is the width of the tire in millimeters. The next number, which is after a slash, is the aspect ratio, which identifies the height in comparison to the width of the tire. "R" is the common letter after that, which is for radial construction. The final number to worry about is two-digits, identifying the wheel diameter in inches.
